For those of you who value your health and well-being, juicing is one of the healthiest and most beneficial activities you could ever wish to perform. Juicing is hugely beneficial, and over the last few years, the juicing movement has gathered pace. This is primarily thanks to Joe Cross and his ground-breaking documentary, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, which put juicing on the map and showed people just how amazing fresh fruits and veggies can be.
Now, for people juicing, drinking freshly juiced fruit juice is easy, but what about fresh vegetable juices? Well, the key to juicing is fresh veggies as fruits are packed full of fructose sugars. Each juice needs some fruit, but ideally it should be made up of around 80% veggies, and 20% fruits. So which vegetables are best for juicing? Well, let’s take a look, shall we?
Broccoli For Juicing
Broccoli – In terms of health benefits, you won’t get many vegetables, green or otherwise, healthier than broccoli. Broccoli is a superfood and rightfully so. It is packed full of immune system boosting vitamin C, as well as potent antioxidants that have been found to help protect the body against a variety of different strains of cancer. These phytochemicals help rid toxins and free radicals from the body and protect against oxidative stress.
Drinking broccoli juice is beneficial because the raw broccoli retains virtually all of its nutrients, which when cooked, some of which would have been lost. Drinking it alone is not all that tasty, but if you combine broccoli juice with the juice of half a lemon, you’re good to go.
Beets For Juicing
Beets – If you want brilliantly vibrant purple juice, beets simply must be an ingredient in your juice. Beets are incredibly beneficial because they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. In particular they are full of Nitric Oxide, which acts as a vasodilator which widens the blood vessels and allows more oxygenated blood and nutrients to be pumped around the body.
Beets are also full of amino acids, including tryptophan, which has been found to elevate mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Kale For Juicing
Kale – Kale is another leafy green vegetable that is incredibly healthy and beneficial for the human body. Kale is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin D, as well as minerals like iron, copper, calcium, and zinc.
Needless to say, fresh kale juice packs a heck of an immune system boosting punch. Juicing fresh kale leaves can be tough, so experts recommend throwing an apple in your juicer, cramming in as many kale leaves as possible, and topping them off with another apple, almost like a kale sandwich. This way, the machine can extract more juices and nutrients from the leaves.
Carrots For Juicing
Carrots – Carrots make great additions to any juice recipes out there because they add such a nice sweetness. In terms of nutrients however, carrots are perfect because they are loaded full of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene functions as a potent antioxidant and it is this nutrient which gives carrots their amazing orange color.
Beta-carotene is also converted into vitamin A by the body, which is great for the eyes, the immune system, and the skin. Carrots also contain other phytochemicals which help protect against various forms of cancer, so again, a couple of fresh carrots in your morning juice will do you a world of good.
